I love staying in boutique, designer hotels. I enjoy the thought that one day my house too could be like that. So I take the opportunity whenever I am away to live my dream. Therefore when I came across the Ames hotel online, I immediately knew that had to stay there during my trip to Boston.

The Ames did not disappoint. It is a member of the Morgans Hotel Group, although I did not realise this at the time I booked, and I had previously stayed at the Royalton in New York many years ago. The hotel is housed in the landmark Ames Building which was constructed in 1889 as Boston's first skyscraper. It is not a large hotel by most standards, but it is beautifully furnished, the staff were quite attentive and the decor was fantastic. I loved the shower and took one more than was strictly necessary just for the sheer joy of the unlimited hot water and fantastic pressure. I booked the day before I was due to travel and was lucky enough to get the corner room on my floor which afforded me glorious views in two directions and overlooked the Old State House. The only drawback I can determine was that the hotel did not offer many extra facilities like a spa or pool; it is more of a business venue and is located solidly in the financial district (which made it a bit of a stroll to the main shopping streets). However for my needs being a short-term stay in the city, it proved more than adequate.

On my return, I learnt that the hotel has just been voted as one of Wallpaper* magazine's best business hotels of 2010.
