I came across a few interesting places while I was in the Caribbean earlier this year and one such spot was the The Orange Street Grocer which is located in the fishing village of Speightstown in the north of Barbados.  I literally stumbled across the restaurant while I was on a 12-hour tour of the island but was more than happy to break the trip and to relax and revive there.

The Orange Street Grocer opened in January 2011.  The  raison d'être behind the restaurant is the provision of good food made with locally sourced, seasonal, organic vegetables and organic meat and seafood and as such chef Cameron Jones creates a new menu daily which is based on the provisions that are available.  The Orange Street Grocer also features an authentic wood-burning pizza oven and offers gluten-free pizzas as one of their specialities.  Also on site is the Island Store, a local grocery which carries gourmet and artisanal food products.

The restaurant's west-facing location features a large waterfront patio, but there is plenty of comfortable seating inside as well.  The walls are covered with local art and sculpture, some of which are available for purchase.  It all creates a chic but comfortable vibe and encourages you to linger.  The Orange Street Grocer is open late on Friday nights to cater to the after work and dinner crowd.
