Called Ilo, which means "Joy" in Finnish, this modern, outdoor play cabin by Koto Elementa is designed as a space for children and adults to shelter in nature.

The timber-clad, mono-pitched building is in keeping with Koto Elementa's simple, pared-back aesthetic and is a sculptural interpretation of the small huts that can be found across Europe, from Bothys to Alpine huts and Norwegian Hytte.

Ilo is built to withstand harsh climates and at the same time to provide shelter and an opportunity to be fully immersed in nature. The buildings are handcrafted in the UK using locally sourced larch timbers, recycled rubber flooring, and all natural paints and finishes.

The designers wanted to create a place that was open yet still defined enough to give the inhabitants a space that can be used for reading and play. Horizontal and vertical windows allow for small views from within the playhouse, as well as encouraging imagination during play time.
