Complementary, the joint exhibition by siblings Nahshon and Shanna Hollis, opened late last month at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art, and showcases two highly creative artists with distinctly different approaches to their work.

Bermudian artist, educator and visual storyteller Louisa Bermingham's show entitled A Personal Ecology represents a highly personal view of the artist's life conveyed from memory, experiences, objects, and relationships. 

The grande dame of Bermuda’s hotels, The Hamilton Princess Hotel and Beach Club - known fondly as the Pink Palace - has partnered with luggage maker SteamLine to produce a luxury line of carry on pieces clad in the hotel's iconic hue.

Born and raised in Bermuda, jeweller Melanie Eddy - who has lived and worked in London for the past two decades - is now the subject of a special exhibition at the Bermuda National Gallery.

On April 22, Bermuda-based Black Pony Gallery, an art platform that focuses on contemporary art makers from the Caribbean and mid-Atlantic islands, launched its first exhibition featuring emerging and established artists in collaboration with Cambridge Beaches hotel to help celebrate the property's centennial this year.

Bermuda-based concept store Merch. launched their little + local campaign on Small Business Saturday to remind the public that shopping on island and at small, independent businesses can have a huge impact on the local economy. 

Bermudian documentary photographer and visual storyteller Nicola Muirhead used the various lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 as a way of challenging her creativity while coming to terms with the fear and anxiety she felt for the future. 

 

We recently stumbled across this fantastic piece of mid-century modern furniture which was produced in the 1950s in-house by Vynex, an Australian-based fabric company that was a division of ICI.

British-Bermudian artist Charlie Godet Thomas takes a diverse approach to his art with pieces that intersect between the disciplines of  writing, painting, sculpture, assemblage, photography, sound and video.

Bermuda National Gallery is currently holding 'Flotsam + Jetsam: The Cost of Modern Living', a solo exhibition by Meredith Andrews in conjunction with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB), one of the oldest charitable organisations on the island. As part of the fundraising programme for the organisation, Andrews is showing nine archival prints, the proceeds from the sale of which will benefit both the Bermuda National Gallery and KBB. In addition to the pieces on display, twenty fine art prints of each artwork numbered and signed by the artist will be available for purchase from the Bermuda National Gallery exclusively, and can be ordered via their online store.

The first solo show on the island of Bermudian artist Gherdai Hassell is currently underway at the Bermuda National Gallery entitled I Am Because You Are. Hassell was driven by an exploration of her heritage and examines the impact of slavery in Bermuda.

We have been featuring the Charman Prize consistently pretty much since its inception, and this year marks the 10th iteration of the show. We often approach it with more than a little trepidation because Bermuda is the muse and for an island that is only twenty-one square miles it can often be a stretch to come up with new and interesting ideas.

Meredith Andrews

Well-known local photographer Meredith Andrews has found a novel way of incorporating her botanical prints on everyday objects. By including her striking pictures of local flowers and foliage on melamine trays, Andrews helps to elevate the mundane.

 

Another local staple that we often feature here is Nettleink, a local graphic design studio that produces Bermuda-inspired textiles and greeting cards.

For the last few years Bermudian jewellery designer Alexandra Mosher has produced an ornament-cum-pendant just in time for the holidays. Previous designs have included a gorgeous, reef-themed wreath and a Bermuda fitted dingy, but after what's been a very challenging year for most, Mosher has chosen to this year to go in a completely different direction.

Local candlemaker Limestone + Cedar Co. have been making Bermuda-inspired scented candles for a number of years however, this is the first time they released a range of seasonal scents for the holidays.

The 2020 Bermuda Biennial was launched in front of  a modest crowd of members on March 5 at The Bermuda National Gallery. The lack of a crowd was unfortunate because the show turned out to be one of the strongest put on by the gallery in several years.
