Artists David Shrigley, Yinka Shonibare, Eddie Peake and Linder Sterling have come together to help raise money for a rapid response fund created by the Contemporary Art Society by designing and producing a collection of limited edition masks.

The CAS Rapid Response Fund will help support artists and museums across the UK during the pandemic and, in partnership with Frieze London, the funds will be used to purchase and donate artworks by UK-based artists to local museums and galleries across the country.

Sterling, known for her photography, radical feminist photomontage and confrontational performance art, has revisited the album cover she co-created for the Buzzcocks’ Orgasm Addict in 1977 while Shrigley has produced a mask that at first glance appears to be a random series of black lines but which also features the word “emotions” in hand written text to acknowledge the difficulties that arise in correctly interpreting human emotions when people wear masks. Shonibare, the British-Nigerian contemporary artist better known for his sculptural installations, used Dutch wax-printed fabric material he customarily incorporates into his paintings and sculptures.

The masks were available through a crowdfunding campaign and are priced at £35 each, or £120 for all four. They can be worn or collected.
