We are going to have to play catch up so we'll take a flying look at the last few New York collections that caught our eye before heading across the Atlantic to London.
After the months we have endured, Brandon Maxwell's collection for Spring featuring a variety of mixed prints and a sophisticated use of pattern matching brought a much needed injection of lightness and fun. The effervescent pieces embodied newness, optimism and better days ahead. He showed eye-watering, psychedelic prints (literally in some instances such as the mushroom print found on bomber jackets and sweaters), iridescent fabrics, and lots of short hemlines showing off expanses of leg. Low-slung, elastic waist trousers were seemingly meant to guide us back into wearing “real” clothes as gently as possible.
Only a few pieces felt like an afterthought; most of them were in fact very well-executed and while none of the silhouettes could be hailed as particularly groundbreaking, it all added up to a very wearable collection.
