Vitra's futuristic exhibition Twentythirtyfive is a collaboration with Virgil Abloh, the American architect, artist and designer. Installed in the Zaha Hadid-designed Fire Station on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein, Abloh and Vitra have collaborated on three products as limited editions and Abloh has also redesigned two products by Jean Prouvé.

Vitra’s latest collaboration is part of a number of experimental projects with designers, architects and artists that have led to discussions that go far beyond the production of chairs and home accessories – resulting in exhibitions, installations and special Vitra editions that reach an audience interested in both social and design issues.

Vitra approached Abloh to help the brand target the "emerging generation" as they felt the multi-faceted designer could help make their products more accessible to social media-minded consumers. The designer delved into Vitra's archive and reimagined many of the furniture brand's most iconic products to help him design the home of a young adult in 2035. With the line between home and work becoming increasingly blurred, the space has been conceived as a place of work and leisure.

The first section of the exhibition called Past/Present is a condensed assemblage of memories and brings Vitra's heritage products like the Eames Stool and the Ball Chair by Eero Aarnio together. Abloh's vision includes a seesaw made out of Charles and Ray Eames' Wire Chairs and a storage cabinet with a numbered orange brick simply called Ceramic Block for shelves. These limited edition designs are available to buy as a limited edition through the Vitra website.

The second section called Tomorrow contains three new products, two of which are the reworked Prouvé designs. The 1950s Antony armchair has been reimagined with a clear plexiglass seat, instead of wood, and its steel frame is coated with bright orange lacquer. Abloh's version of the 1940s Petite Potence wall lamp is also orange, with a metal cage around the LED bulb.

Julien Lanoo for Vitra
In Abloh, Vitra has selected a cooperation partner who is known not only for pushing boundaries, but also for turning an entire system upside down and reinterpreting the concept of design.

Twentythirtyfive was held from 12 June and ends today, 31 July.
