Much new design over the last few months has focused on the ways in which we can adapt our public spaces and businesses to the new realities of pandemic life like the creative use of screens and barriers to maintain social distancing and hands-free taps and handles to eliminate the need for us to come into contact with surfaces. Plato Design’s Alessandro Mattei and Caterina Naglieri have instead chosen a different path and during lockdown sought a way to stay creative while promoting independent production.

The result is the Esse lamp. Made by hand from concrete, the half-moon shaped lamp is manufactured using limited resources and simple tools. Its shape and essential lines are the result of the duo's inability to make complex moulds. The lamp's mode of manufacture eliminates any unnecessary steps and as such makes it perfect for current circumstances which have caused uncertainties the product chain and the design industry.

Half of the proceeds of the sale of the lamp will be donated to the Lang Europe Onlus Foundation in support of the World Health Organisation’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund. The donations will ensure patients receive proper care and frontline workers get essential supplies and information.
