Through the 36 Days of Type project, Trinidadian artist and graphic designer Nicholas Huggins has created an architectural alphabet of the Caribbean.

The annual online project invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists to express their particular interpretation of the letters and numbers of the Latin alphabet for 36 consecutive days.

Huggins' take on the series captures the vernacular of Caribbean architecture, as well as its vibrant spirit and history. Some of the images are clearly recognisable, landmark structures such as Stollmeyer's Castle or the Roman Catholic Archbishop's residence in Port of Spain, Trinidad while others are merely stylised representations of buildings that speak to the region's design aesthetic such as the iconic chattel house.

Huggins worked from a trove of photographs and sketches, interpreting what he saw into letters with architectural shapes. As a cohesive series, the Caribbean architectural alphabet is a melding of regional architecture and language as a means of defining a Caribbean aesthetic that is authentic to him.
