Diario has taken the popular, traditional Mexican market bag and translated it into a contemporary, everyday bag that can be used for shopping, carrying personal objects or whatever it fits within.

Traditionally, shoppers have used a bag made of durable plastic material that can be found in a variety of colours. Popular with butchers and greengrocers the bag became a mainstay with consumers because of its practical design and durability and it was given gratis as form of advertisement to loyal consumers at the end of the year.

Diario collaborated with a local producer of the traditional market bag taking its shape and style and updating it to create the La Merced bag, named after a neighbourhood in Mexico City that has been long been associated with retail and wholesale commerce, especially traditional Mexican objects and foodstuff.

Several different models of the bag in a variety of forms, colours and patterns have been produced in the workshop located in Xochimilco, in the south of the city. The collaboration has resulted in a Diario’s new everyday bag which comes in a monochromatic colour way where all of the details and shades are of the same colour, allowing the different materials and textures to be showcased, or a colourful version where all of the components are different colours resulting in a fun and joyful take on the bag.
